MAGMA KÉKFRANKOS
2022
This is an unfiltered Kékfrankos from the volcanic soils of the Tihány peninsula on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Tamás Kovács' family has been making wine in the village of Csopak for more than five generations.
The Magma was spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in 700 L open vats, with manual punch-down for 7-10 days. It was then aged for 12 months in ceramic eggs (50%) and used 225 L French oak barrels (50%). They were then blended and remained on the lees in stainless steel for 9 months until release. The wine is juicy and spicy, with ripe red cherry, boysenberry and green herbs. Certified organic, unfiltered and unfined, vegan.
From Wine Enthusiast: “Deep violet to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of Chambord, bittersweet chocolate and sage leaf. Slightly spicy at first sip, it offers clove and mint tea notes alongside pomegranate, cranberry, eucalyptus, milk chocolate and dried marjoram flavors. Ultrasoft tannins make for a smooth sip.” (92 Points, December 2023)
