NAGY-SOMLÓI ÖREGTŐKÉK FURMINT

2023

Kis Tamás is making small-production, native grape wines from his organic 8-hectare property on Somló. Somló is Hungary’s smallest and most distinctive appellation. Its soils, rich in black basalt and other volcanic minerals, give the wines a distinctive smoky quality.

The 2023 Öregtőkék (old vine) Furmint comes from vines that are 75 years old, on the south side of Somló hill. The wine was spontaneously fermented and aged in new and used 200 and 500 L Hungarian and French oak barrels for 8 months. Rich and expansive, round and rich, with golden apples, green herbs and salty finish. Unfiltered and unfined.

From Wine Enthusiast: “Aromas of peach, honeydew and nutmeg waft from the glass. Peach and honeydew transition to the palate alongside flavors of dried apricot, a hint of honeycomb and a touch of salinity that lingers in the mouth.” (93 Points, December 2023)
