NAGY-SOMLÓI ÖREGTŐKÉK JUHFARK
2023
Juhfark is native to Somló, Hungary’s smallest appellation in western Hungary. Somló is famous for its distinctively fiery terroir; the soil is clay, sand, loess and volcanic basalt rock, and these flavors are strikingly pronounced in the delicate, thin-skinned Juhfark grape.
2023 was a challenging vintage on Somló, so Tomi only harvested Juhfark from his old vines (öregtőkék). The resulting wine is rounded, salty and mineral-driven, with white pepper, smoke, and golden apples on the nose and mouth. Great lively acidity. Spontaneous fermentation in 200, 300 and 500 L used and new Hungarian and French oak, and aging in barrels on the fine lees for 8 months. Unfiltered and unfined. Certified organic, low sulfites added.
From Wine Enthusiast: “This medium gold wine has aromas of casaba melon, nectarine and flint. It is full on the palate and has flavors of peach, honeydew, nutmeg and candied orange peel that are encased in a layer of shimmering acidity.” (92 Points, December 2023)
