KADARKA

2021

Kadarka is a rare native Hungarian grape variety, believed to be brought to Hungary hundreds of years ago from the Balkans. While Kadarka was once the most commonly planted red variety in Hungary, it’s popularity waned in the 20th century, and vineyards were replanted with easier-to-cultivate varieties like Kékfrankos and Portugieser.

This Kadarka was grown organically by the Dúzsi family in the warm and hilly southern region of Szekszárd. The Kadarka is cultivated in traditional bush vines, and the vines are 30 and 80 years old.

This wine was spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in open 500 L barrels, and aging for 12 months in used large Hungarian oak. The wine is spicy, with dried forest fruits, paprika and plum, and soft tannins. Practicing organic Farming.

From Wine Enthusiast: “This bright ruby wine has a nose of cherry preserves, dried cranberry and fennel bulb. It is soft on the palate, offering pomegranate, raspberry, aniseed, lavender and dried thyme flavors backed by a layer of silky tannins. If your idea of a Hungarian red is overbearing and highly tannic, this is a good place to start to help change your mind.” (93 Points, December 2023)
